Addition to an Existing Order

Project two consisted of designing an addition to the Smith House, built in 1965 by architect Richard Meier. Located on the shore of Long Island Sound. The Smith Family requested an addition that would maintain an integrity of the original design, while having its own presence.

Throughout the process, one must take into consideration conceptual analogies for addition as well as a meta/idea and narrative to meet the needs of the Smith Family. These contributors would end up creating new systems and patterns that were not found in the original design of the house.

Narrative

As per the Smith family's request, an addition is planned to be constructed on their property. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have closely followed the South American Indigenous culture, to the extent of collecting and preserving Indigenous artifacts. With the family growing, Mr. Smith plans to have a more interactive and unified addition to the house. This addition is intended to reflect the Indigenous culture of unity and the importance of family, while still implementing privacy and room for personal growth. Such addition will include a common room in which such culture is showcased, as well as a Master suite for the parents. Mrs. Smith also requested an exercise room and a private outdoor area.

Preliminary Designs

Three preliminary designs which were created by formulating the necessary masses and circulation path.  After analyzing which design better corresponded to the original circulation and which one had the most potential, I decided to go with the second design.
