Project One
Form and Function

Project One applied the relationship between form and function to an already existing structure. This was done by adding in a multi-hinge household object and successfully integrating it with the 30'x40' bridge opening.

Movement Analogies
Throughout the process, five household items with two or more mechanical hinges were selected. From the five, only three items were chosen so that they would work with the selected bridge openings. The three items that were selected were the eyelash curler, straight cut snips, and an umbrella. Each item was then 3D modeled and diagramed, which later helped with creating new forms and functionality to the prototype bridges.

Selected Prototype

For this project, the umbrella was paired with the Boloshoy Obukhovsky Bridge. The contraction and extension of the umbrella move the roadbed vertically, to the point where the umbrella arms are pocketed into the bridge structure. Later into the design, pulleys and more structural framing will provide a more efficient design.
