Project's three objective was to design three non-denominational chapels for Farmingdale State College. Using light in a creative form would create a peaceful space where people of all faiths can worship and reflect. By controlling light, the spaces become functional and spiritual, ideal for worship and reflection.

Ligh Research Background

Riola Parish Church - Alvar Aalto

Aalto's church uses natural light as a key element for his design. Clerestories and glazed sections between arches bring controlled light into the interior of the space. Such clerestories are placed in the direction of the sun's path, thus providing enough controlled lighting.

Having intentionally exposed columns and non-orthogonal frames provides the church with a more sculptural character, compared to traditional straight columns. These columns are used for vertical and dead loads from above.

Design Process

Within the project, the use of light cannon was implemented as a way to control light and intensify the spiritual connection between the building and the individual.

Backlighting was also used as a way to provide a somber and tranquil environment for those mourning or meditating.

Using roof lanterns or skylights allowed for one of the chapels in the project, to have a divine and refreshing feeling to those searching for guidance and peace.

Site Selection

Placing the church near the Melville Road entrance seemed adequate. Having an open area surrounded by preexisting buildings allowed for a proper public space with light. Additionally, the area is near the sports complex that holds a memorial for the 9/11 victims. As well as having an academic building for which students can have a moment of peace and tranquility before a test or a college game.
